Conquering Gym Anxiety: Your Path to Confidence with Collective Fitness
Stepping into a gym for the first time can feel like stepping into the unknown. The unfamiliar equipment, the seasoned regulars, and that nagging worry about “doing it wrong” can make even the most motivated person hesitate. At Collective Fitness, we get it. That’s why we’re here to help you move past the fear and into a place of confidence, progress, and enjoyment.
According to a recent article by our parnters in Les Mills, gym anxiety - often called “gymtimidation” - is real. A 2023 survey found that one in three feel too self-conscious to step into a gym, with many worrying about being judged, using equipment incorrectly, or just feeling out of place. But here’s the truth: every single person in the gym was a beginner once.
If you’ve ever felt like the gym isn’t for you, keep reading. We’re going to change that.
Six Ways to Overcome Gym Anxiety
1. Flip the Script: You Belong Here
One of the biggest misconceptions about the gym is that people are watching and judging you. In reality, most people are too focused on their own workout to notice what you’re doing. The gym isn’t just for bodybuilders or athletes—it’s for everyone, and that includes you. Shift your mindset: you have just as much right to be there as anyone else.
2. Get the Lay of the Land
Walking into a gym full of machines you don’t recognise can feel overwhelming. That’s why we always recommend familiarising yourself with the space first. We offer gym inductions where a coach will walk you through the setup, show you how to use the equipment, and answer any questions. Once you know where everything is, the space feels far less intimidating.
3. Ask, Learn, Repeat
There’s no shame in not knowing something. Asking questions is how you get better. Our coaches are here to help—whether it’s showing you how to adjust a machine, demonstrating proper form, or helping you build a plan. A single session with a coach can fast-track your confidence and set you up for success.
4. Have a Game Plan
Going in without a plan can make the gym feel chaotic and overwhelming. Instead, decide exactly what you’ll do before you arrive. Whether it’s following a structured program (like those in the Collective Fitness app) or having a simple goal—like using the treadmill for 15 minutes—knowing what to do takes the pressure off.
5. Find Your Tribe with Group Training
One of the best ways to break through gym anxiety is to train alongside others. Group fitness classes offer structure, guidance, and a sense of community. As part of our offering, we offer Les Mills classes which are world-renowned workouts led by expert coaches. These classes take the guesswork out of training and make exercising feel less like a solo mission. Plus, you’ll meet like-minded people who are on the same journey as you.
6. Start Small, Build Big
If walking into the gym still feels overwhelming, start with movement at home. Les Mills offers digital workouts that you can do in your own space to build confidence before taking things to the gym. Practising bodyweight exercises, using light dumbbells, or even following a mobility routine can help you feel more in control before stepping into the gym setting.
